Make your Computer Uglier (and Faster)

Our computers have been getting prettier and prettier. Windows 7 is a fine example of a the trend towards the beautification of our computers and operating systems. Like Windows Vista, the operating system puts an emphasis on the flashy, the soft-edged, and a colorful interface. However, these features come at a price.

When your operating system includes features such as shadows, thumbnail icons, desktop widgets, and especially transparencies, it eats up a lot more resources. This is one reason why never operating systems need much more advanced computers, with more memory and faster processors.

Luckily, Windows provides an easy way to control these settings, and squeeze a little more speed from your computer. Tone down the flashy pretty things and you’ll free up system resources.

The following are the steps for Windows XP. Vista and Windows 7 will be similar.

Click the Start button

Right click on “My Computer,” click properties

Select the Advanced Tab

Under the Performance section, click the Settings button

From here, you can fine-tune which visual settings you want to keep, and which to disable. You can quickly turn all the optional settings off by clicking the ‘Adjust for Best Performance button.

Then click OK.

On the same note, you can change your Windows theme, to be simpler overall.

Right-click anywhere on your desktop, and click Properties.

Click the themes tab

From here, you can select the Windows Classic theme.

This one has the old fashioned grey boxes, and the simple interface.
